Part of what I'm a little leery of, too, is offering lots with a swapped-out trash can for download. I don't do it often, but sometimes I'll package up a lot for someone if they express an interest in my pictures of it. In that, a full default replacement seems... more courteous? But I guess I could do what I do with the batbox, the clothing tool, the Visitor Controller, and the ACR controller, and stuff the regular trashcan in a box on the lot somewhere.

Aww, the maids-compost mod doesn't work with later EPs? I'd been thinking about getting that one, although I need to update a bunch of trash cans anyway.

If the mirror (or whatever prayable object) provided fun... maybe not fun, maybe comfort or something, I think it would go a long way toward making it feel like individual Sims can be religious. Anything that aids the suspension of disbelief is a win in my book!
